An Unfortunate Relapse

It all began when I was invited to a dear friend’s house for dinner, and she made pasta and chicken with an olive oil, pesto, and pine nut sauce. It was DELICIOUS. Until that time I’ve only been eating “brown” carbs – whole wheat breads and pastas. That taste of old school pasta sent me over the edge of a very steep canyon of desire. Last night when I asked Jameson what he wanted for dinner, I secretly prayed he’d say spaghetti. And he did. Two nights in a row, people.

Hi, my name is Erin, and I’m addicted to pasta.
I truly thought that if I were to relapse I would do so with baked goods (I love a good cinnamon roll), but it was the pasta that ultimately got me. The sweet Siren song of thin spaghetti was too beautiful to resist.

So today I’m going to start over, and keep starting over until I have successfully conquered this food addiction that has plagued my life for so long. I will not feel bad about my momentary loss of sanity, but move forward knowing that I have the tools and the power to lose weight, make great food choices, and enjoy life.

  1. I think the key to successful weight loss is not denying yourself to much. Are you NEVER going to eat pasta for as long as you live????? :) no, I didn't think so. I know that I sure enjoy pasta once in a while. And now there are so many choices that are really tasty. It's all about the sauce any way ,,, isn't it? I have been trying to go gluten free so I like rice pasta. I really don't notice any difference except it doesn't take as long to cook as the whole wheat pasta. I also think that the key to not denying yourself anything is measuring out a portion and keeping the rest off the table. I love pasta with red sauce and roasted veggies! You my lovely friend are doing Awesome! Don't be so hard on yourself.

    1. Cathy is right. Denial gets you no where. You have done such an amazing job...just taking the first step. Be proud of how far you have come! :) xo

  2. Yep. Pasta. *sigh* But relapses will happen, and someday in the not too distant future you will have such a good relationship with food that pasta can be a (small) part of your life again.

If you think this might be an ongoing problem (especially if Jameson loves that evil starchy goodness!), than just have a great big yummy salad with a small side. It's win-win. Oh, and also, in Italy, the pasta is far more al dente than the way we prepare it here because the less it's cooked, the longer it takes your body to break it down(the more it's cooked, the faster it turns into sugar). It's how those Italians stay thin, they say!

Anyway, good for you for moving on and not letting a minor misstep knock you down! You rock.

  3. You are doing great. Think of your body as a machine, and you need to fuel the machine. Pasta is not a bad thing.. sounds like, but the word choice of cravings, and your love of cinnabuns.. is that it made your blood sugar spike. Check out glycemic Index ratings on foods. I love potatoes, but I love sweet potatoes more now, because they enter the blood stream slower. No, I'm not saying that glycemic Index is the be-all end-all, but it is a good tool to note and notice what foods satisfy me longer.

I make my own pasta bake/pot.. it makes 7 servings, about right for a week....

One box of Meijer Whole Wheat Pasta (I perfer Rotini)
    One Jar of Classico Sauce
One pound of Chicken Thighs ground into Sausage (1 lb thighs, 2 teaspoons Kosher Salt, 2 teaspoons Fennel (Toasted and ground in your spice grinder), 1/2 tea oregano, pepper, and thyme, marjoram if you are feeling frisky, and red pepper flake if you like it hot.). It's simple, and good, and filling. The flavor is there, the thighs have more fat than chicken breasts, and that's Okay, because fat carrys flavor.

It's 380 Calories if you divvy it up 7 ways... or 530 if you split it up 5 ways.. either way, not a bad lunch or dinner.. and if you are craving it... it's a good choice to have.

    1. Thanks, Dan! I don't have a grinder, but can get chicken sausage at my Family Fare. Will that work?

  4. Thanks All! My love of pasta is on-going and well documented. Please rest assured that I am introducing whole wheat pasta into my diet, and my family has it once a week. This week we're going to have a "poverty meal", which is basically goulash, with whole wheat elbows.
